Howard was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on 11 Jan 44 vs. 30 Luftwaffe fighters over Oschersleben, Germany while flying his P-51B "Ding Hao" (AJ-A) in defense of B-17 bombers of the 401BG(H). He was credited with 4 kills on this day.
